Really early in our lives we learned to adjust ourselves to environmental conditions. When growing older we process the already brilliant growth even more. Although consciousness in life grows, the greater part of this process remains unconscious. During many years in our adulthood we learn to deal with the fact that time and time again some of these old (unconscious) habits keep on showing up, despite our effort to change them. A beautiful example is (too) often having an appetite for all sorts of snacks in between meals. It is possible this habit popped up after a period in your teen-age years when life was maybe not so easy for you.
Or you are worried all the time about what will be next, you are actually busy caring for to-morrow and the day after to-morrow. Thus not noticing the experience of the moment. Aren’t you surprised for instance, when you discover caressing your spouse’s cheek, your thoughts didn’t go along with the gesture? Or when you take a sip of your favorite drink, the exquitness of its flavour is not noticed by you because of your throughts keeping you busy? In our nowadays life this is normal, it is the way we have gotten wired.
In time, consciousness will be integrated in all sorts of habits. So we develop the skill to extend the experience of joy in the moment. We learn to know ourselves better: you will be getting familiar with your patterns and thoughts. You’ll look at yourself with more love and compassion. You will learn to stay with emotion: do I chose to go with it … or … nah … not this time …?
